A fabled West Hills compound in rustic Box Canyon, once home to a cult leader and his barefooted followers in robes, is on the market for $4.8 million.

Set on 16.5 acres, the property branded “Xanadu” and promoted for its “boundless potential” boasts 4,000 square feet of living space across several modest houses and a lodge. Combined, they offer seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

It was here that Krishna Venta, a small-time criminal born Francis Hernan Pencovic, proclaimed himself the second coming of Jesus Christ and established his WKFL (Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Love) Fountain religious sect in 1949. He predicted a global war and set out to gather 144,000 people to rebuild afterward.

In all, there were about 100 members who lived at the Fountain of the World.

Charles Manson and his inner circle of his clan often visited the commune in 1968 for food, shelter and worship. The story goes, the cult leader tried to take over but was asked to leave.

Unlike the Manson Family, Venta’s group was peaceful and dedicated to service. An article that appeared at LAist.com in 2018 described how they came to the aid of stranded motorists and disaster victims, including a deadly plane crash in Chatsworth that killed 35 of the 48 passengers and crew on board.

At the commune, followers lived and worked on grounds “so big that I have to show it in my Jeep — or as we call it, the Jurassic tour,” said co-listing agent Holly Hatch of Calabasas-based Holly and Chris Luxury Homes Group at Coldwell Banker Realty.

The oak-laden landscape features include a natural amphitheater, sandstone rock formations and caves, and a hidden waterfall.

Hatch, who shares the listing with Chris Johnson, said she has heard from potential buyers interested in turning the property into a yoga retreat, a music festival or even a Jewish camp.

“It’s a cool place, and the history is interesting,” she said.

The property was also the site of a double-suicide bombing in December 1958.

Venta and seven followers were killed in an explosion carried out by two disgruntled ex-cultists. The two men left recordings in which they accused Venta of fraud and having sex with their wives.

According to news reports, the blast also decimated a stone monastery and triggered a brush fire.

Still, much of the compound remains as it was.

“If you’re touring the property, you’ll see carvings in the staircase of (Venta’s) teachings,” said Hatch, although she couldn’t remember any off the top of her head during the brief phone conversation.

A bust of the slain leader is on display in a wall alcove in the lodge. It also has a tunnel, which leads from the pulpit.

Hatch said Venta used it to suddenly appear and disappear before his followers.

While some people find the history of the property fascinating, others are drawn by its tranquility.

As Hatch put it, “It’s similar to Topanga in that it feels like you’re far from L.A. even though you’re very close to it.”

Dodgers superstar and former Angels two-way player Shohei Ohtani has reportedly scooped up a secluded luxury home in La Cañada Flintridge for $7.85 million.

Completed in 2013 on just under an acre — and previously home to Adam Carolla — the 7,327-square-foot nod to mid-century modern and contemporary design has five bedrooms, seven bathrooms and amenities devoted to wellness, fitness and entertainment. Records show an LLC managed by Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, bought the house May 15.

The Los Angeles Times first reported the sale, citing real estate records and an unidentified source. Southern California News Group has also been told the buyer is the Japanese baseball player by an unnamed source who was familiar with the sale but not involved in the deal.

All parties involved in the transaction have been tight-lipped.

Listing agent Peter Owens of Douglas Elliman Real Estate declined to comment through a spokesperson, citing non-disclosure agreements. Jeanne Valvo of Coldwell Banker Realty, who represented Ohtani, did not respond to a request for comment.

A promotional video for the house shows it sits at the end of a long driveway.

Inside, stone and wood-paneled accent walls and an abundance of glass adorn the open-plan living space. Floor-to-ceiling windows, clerestories and skylights flood the house with natural light and frame the sculptural branches of mature oaks that surround the property.

Outdoor amenities include a kitchen, infinity-edge pool, spa, fit pit and sport court.

The backyard is visible from a private balcony off the primary suite, which offers a seating area in the bedroom, a spa-style soaking tub in the bathroom and a large walk-in closet.

Records show the seller is Carolla, who bought the home in 2018 for $7.327 million.

When he listed the house in June 2023 for $8.99 million, “The Adam Carolla Show” podcast host told the Wall Street Journal that he and then-wife Lynette Paradise had remodeled the primary suite, the kitchen and the movie theater. The couple filed for divorce in May 2021 after nearly 19 years of marriage and finalized it on Jan. 24.

People magazine reported that Carolla, 59, agreed to pay the mother of his 17-year-old twin son and daughter an equalization settlement of $4 million, which included the sale of their family home.

Carolla, 59, dropped the price in October to $8.35 million. It closed at $500,000 below asking price, just five months after Ohtani left the Angels and signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers.

Ohtani, 29, played six seasons with the Angels as a designated hitter and pitcher. He won two American League MVP awards, making him the greatest MLB “two-way” player since Babe Ruth in 1919.

Kate Pierson of The B-52s has listed her kitschy Airstream “glampground” in the Mojave Desert for $452,000.

Sited in unincorporated Landers with mountain views, Kate’s Lazy Desert comprises two parcels for a total of 10 acres. It comes with six fully hooked up and equipped vintage trailers, including one filled with B-52s memorabilia, a 400-square-foot “homestead cabin” dating to 1955 and a 225-square-foot storage shed.

Records show Pierson and her wife,  the artist and designer Monica Coleman, paid $18,000 for the initial 5-acre property in November 2011. A year later, Kate’s Lazy Desert opened for business with nightly rates from $200-plus, Yelp.com reviews show. In June 2017, the couple expanded the grounds through the purchase of a neighboring 5-acre vacant lot for $20,000.

Since it hit the market in early April, the listing agent Niko Esposito of Paul Kaplan Group/Bennion Deville Homes has heard from “starry-eyed super creatives,” adventure groups and investors hoping to take advantage of the conditional use permit included in the asking price.

The CUP allows the next owner to operate the property as a motel, trailer park or campground.

Given the area’s history as a gathering place for spiritualists and UFO enthusiasts, it’s also ideal for “cosmic vibing” and “extraterrestrial communicating,” the listing reads.

The property is near Joshua Tree National Park, The Integratron and Giant Rock Boulder, a seven-story monolith. There are also popular restaurants in the area, including Pappy and Harriet’s and La Copine.

Pierson, 76, is a founding member and vocalist of The B-52s. Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976, the band — including Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland and Cindy Wilson — has produced hits such as “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack,” “Roam” and many others over the years and continues to perform.

In addition to The B-52s, Pierson has appeared as a guest vocalist on Iggy Pop’s “Candy” and R.E.M.’s “Shiny Happy People.” She released her debut solo album, “Guitars and Microphones,” in 2015.

Pierson also ventured into vacation rentals. Before Kate’s Lazy Desert, she launched Kate’s Lazy Meadow, a Catskills motel, in 2003. After selling that property in August 2021 for $2.3 million, Pierson and Coleman opened Kate’s Lazy Cape, a beach house in Truro, Massachusetts. The property is advertised on Airbnb at $850 nightly.

A South of the Boulevard home in Sherman Oaks owned by Chris Kilmore, DJ of the rock band Incubus, is on the market for $4.599 million.

The three-story, 5,579-square-foot Mediterranean-style residence has five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a vault-door-secured safe room. Records show the turntablist bought the property for $2.55 million in April 2016.

Built on the nearly quarter-acre hillside in 2004, the house recently underwent a “no-expenses-spared” remodel, according to the listing. MLS photos show the home’s interior bathed in natural light, and high ceilings give the living space a sense of openness.

Archways, wood beams, custom iron French doors, and European-style fixtures and hardware further enhance the property’s character.

Highlights include an updated gourmet kitchen with floor-to-ceiling white oak cabinets, marble countertops, a waterfall island, hidden high-end appliances and a walk-in pantry. The kitchen opens to the dining and family rooms.

French doors extend the main living areas outside onto a large Saltillo-tiled balcony with wrought-iron railing. The balcony overlooks the backyard barbecue center, outdoor fireplace, and putting green.

Most rooms in the house offer treetop views of the hillside, valley and mountains.

There are five fireplaces, four indoors, including in the primary suite. The suite also offers a walk-in closet, heated floors, quartzite countertops and an LED-illuminated mirror with built-in smart technology.

Other property features include a gym, movie theater, wine tasting room and upgraded electrical for EV charging.

The listing agent is Kilmore’s wife, Tenny Kilmore of Coldwell Banker Realty.

Kilmore, 51, joined Incubus for the 1998 “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.” tour. After that, they jumped into the studio to record “Make Yourself,” which produced several hits, including the band’s highest-charting song, “Drive.”

Incubus followed that success with more albums, including the studio releases “Morning View” (2001), “A Crow Left of the Murder…” (2004), “Light Grenades” (2006), “If Not Now, When?” (2011), and “8” (2017).

Last year, the band returned to the studio for “Morning View XXIII,” a re-recording of the 2001 album with Nicole Row, the band’s new bass player. The album will drop on May 10. But first, Incubus will play the main stage on May 4 at the BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach. General admission tickets start at $179 for one day.

Up for grabs at $5.495 million is a Camarillo mansion that served as the backdrop of the Netflix docuseries “Hype House.”

The unscripted series, which streamed eight episodes in January 2022, followed the TikTok content-creator collective of Gen-Zers by the same name. They lived and created videos together at this 11,291-square-foot, Mediterranean-style house.

Built on 20 acres in the gated equestrian estate community of Lexington Hills in 1998, it has eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and multiple entertaining spaces. There’s a home theater and game room inside, and a pool with a waterslide, waterfall, swim-up bar, and two spas outside.

“Sweeping lawns and panoramic 360-degree views of the city, mountains and ocean create a one-of-a-kind picturesque setting,” the listing reads.

Records show Hype House founding member and manager Thomas Petrou purchased the property in December 2020 for $5 million.

The house sits behind a private driveway gate at the end of a long, tree-lined drive with a roundabout anchored by a large fountain.

Double doors open into the foyer with a chandelier hanging from the high ceiling and a curved staircase with an ornate wrought-iron banister. Abundant windows fill the interior with natural light.

A floor-to-ceiling fireplace warms the living room, which leads to the formal dining room.

The eat-in gourmet kitchen, which has been updated, boasts top-of-the-line Thermador appliances, a large center island with seating and a breakfast nook.

French doors connect the main living areas with the central courtyard.

Up the staircase, the primary suite offers a sitting area, a walk-in closet and a large bathroom with a spa-like shower and a separate soaking tub. All of the bathrooms feature new custom finishes.

The Tuscan-like grounds boast lush foliage, ample lounge areas and a flat acre for a future equestrian center or orchard.

There’s a five-car garage and some recent upgrades, including a water filtration system, a generator and a Wi-Fi tower.

Michelle Meyers of The Agency has the listing.

The 8,000-square-foot house has five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a spacious great room with glass walls that opens to the terraced backyard.

Records show Hall bought the property in May 2022 for $6.1 million, 19% more than its asking price, although it initially surfaced for sale at $8.5 million in December. It’s also available for a monthly lease of $29,500.

Built on an over-three-quarter-acre lot in 2018, the house has a dining room with a bar and a fireplace in the living room.

The gourmet kitchen has top-of-the-line appliances, a double oven, an espresso machine and a pantry with a utility sink. A second kitchen is on the lower level, along with a home theater

Pocket doors open from both sides of the primary suite on the upper level, which is accessible by a floating staircase or elevator. The suite features a fireplace, a seating area with a wet bar and a balcony that overlooks the pool, which boasts a see-through glass wall.

There’s a spa, lounge deck, expansive covered patio with a fire pit, a barbecue area, an outdoor powder room and a pool shower.

Features of the primary bathroom include dual water closets, custom lighting and a large walk-in closet with a dedicated vanity area.

A rooftop deck offers valley and mountain views.

Brooke A. Elliott and Joshua Morrow of Christie’s AKG share the listing.

Hall, 38, gained popularity after a brief stint on the ninth season of “American Idol” and amassed a large following on YouTube. In 2015, he starred in the MTV docuseries “Todrick.” He went on to choreograph and occasionally judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

He also played Lola in the Broadway show “Kinky Boots” and later appeared as Billy Flynn in “Chicago” on Broadway and the West End.

A gated 28-acre Palm Springs retreat, previously owned by late “Three’s Company” star Suzanne Somers and her husband, producer Alan Hamel, is on the market again.

The asking price is $8.95 million.

Completed in 1928, the five-structure residence at the top of a meandering driveway boasts a main house and four unique villas for a combined 7,280 square feet with seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. The villas include a rock house built by modernist architect Albert Frey.

A private funicular carries passengers up the terraced hill, surrounded by rock formations.

Somers and Hamel owned the desert compound at the base of Mount San Jacinto for almost 45 years, as the Southern California News Group reported in February 2021. County records show it traded hands for $8.5 million in May 2021.

After holding it in a trust for two years, the new owner listed it for $12.9 million in April and pulled it off the market in June. The property reappeared in January 2024 at the current price, 31% less than its initial ask.

Multiple Listing Service photos reveal new whitewashed interiors and exteriors with fresh staging, but the structures show no significant changes.

The main house is in a European villa style. It has a two-room, eat-in kitchen with a hidden wine cellar, a formal dining room and a poolside living room.

Hillside views abound from the primary suite.

The grounds include a natural rock amphitheater, a lagoon-style pool with multiple lounge decks, a hot tub, hiking trails and a waterfall.

Compass’s Scott Lyle has listed the property just minutes from restaurants and shops in Downtown Palm Springs.

Somers gained popularity for her role as Chrissy Snow, a loveable yet ditzy character in the ABC roommate sitcom “Three’s Company.” She co-starred with John Ritter and Joyce Dewitt from 1977 to 1984.

Besides her acting career, she is remembered as a singer, best-selling author and businesswoman behind ventures like the ThighMaster exercise device.

Somers died at the age of 76 in October 2023 after a decades-long battle with breast cancer.

A Woodland Hills midcentury-modern home once owned by late comedic actor Ted Knight has sold for $1.205 million.

The home listed for $1.199 million in September.

Noted architect William Krisel designed the 1,770-square-foot house. Completed in 1954 and remodeled by the seller, it has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and original vaulted ceilings with north and south-facing clerestory windows.

There’s also a one-bedroom, one-bathroom guest house with a kitchenette.

A pool graces the backyard.

Records show the seller’s family bought the house in September 1977 for $33,000, shortly after Knight’s tenure there.

Knight, most famous for his roles on television in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Too Close for Comfort,” as well as in the comedy sports movie “Caddyshack,” owned the property with his wife, Dorothy, from 1966 to 1973. That’s according to listing agent Gina Isaac of Nourmand & Associates, who sought the information from the title representative.

Southern California News Group could not find records linking the property to Knight, whose real name was Theodore C. Konopka. He died in August 1986 at age 62. However, Isaac says a 1967 building permit bears the actor’s stage name.

Charity Jones of NextHome Real Estate Rockstars represented the buyer.

Former “Real Housewives of Orange County” cast member Elizabeth Lyn Vargas has put her La Quinta Polo Estates home on the market after a complete renovation for $8.995 million.

The list price is nearly triple the $3 million she paid for it in February 2021, records show.

“My blood, sweat and tears have gone into this remodel, and a lot of money, and I’m now finally finished,” Vargas said in an Instagram post in October.

Built on a 2-acre lot in 1991, the roughly 10,000-square-foot home has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

Updates include new flooring, fixtures, interior and exterior paint and kitchen and bathroom remodels, according to TMZ, which first reported the listing, twice.

TMZ reported Vargas initially put the home up for sale at $9.95 million in March 2022. It resurfaced Nov. 10 at its current ask.

While the listing is spare on actual details, before and after MLS photos show its transformation from a red-roofed Spanish style with terracotta to a modern luxury home.

A towering portico leads to the foyer of the main house. Beyond it lies the living area where built-in display cabinets flank the fireplace surround and raised hearth in the all-white space with decorative ceiling beams and marbled floors.

Up a few steps is a full wet bar and piano area.

What had been the library off the great room is now another living room.

French doors open the main living areas onto the lush, resort-style grounds that boast a large pond teeming with over 300 koi, a pergola-covered barbecue center and a great room with a fireplace, a swimming pool with a fountain feature, a spa and a tennis court.

There’s also a guest house.

Back inside the main house, a door separates the dining room from the eat-in gourmet kitchen with a waterfall island and a breakfast nook. The kitchen flows into the family room.

At the opposite end of the house is the primary suite. It has two walk-in closets and a bathroom with a jetted tub and a separate shower. French doors open the primary bedroom to a large sitting room, which leads to a home gym with a bathroom.

A perk of living in the gated community is access via private entrance to the nearby polo fields, where tournaments and music festivals are the big draw.

Bravo fired Vargas in 2021 after one season on the show. She’s opted to keep the listing in the Bravo housewife family with Gina Kirschenheiter, Travis Mullen and Dave Archuletta of First Team Real Estate.

In addition to reality television, Vargas is known as a businesswoman. Her brands include being the founder and president of Newport Beach-based Vargas Spirits, the parent company of Vargas Vodka. She also established the no-kill We Care Rescue Ranch foundation whose work includes raising money for free and low-cost spay and neutering.

A Swiss Miss house, one of 15 designed by modernist architect Charles Du Bois to stand out from its neighbors in Palm Springs’ Vista Las Palmas enclave, is back on the market.

The asking price is $2.498 million.

Completed in 1958, the 2,132-square-foot Polynesian-inspired double A-frame known as “Alohaus” has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. It sits on a third-acre-plus lot at the end of the street.

The property hit the market for the first time in 20 years in September 2022 for $2.995 million but was quickly removed by the longtime owners. Records show they bought it for $580,000 in January 2003.

“The sellers could not find a suitable replacement property that was worthy enough of giving up this house,” said Scott Histed of Bennion Deville Homes, the listing agent.

That has since changed.

This year in September, the house resurfaced on the MLS for $2.798 million. The price then dropped in early October by 11% to its current ask “to sell quickly,” Histed explained.

As previously reported, the midcentury-modern home has been well-preserved.  The all-white, open-plan living space features soaring tongue and groove ceilings, concrete floors and glass walls with views of the backyard pool and mountains.

A stone wall fireplace anchors the great room. The combined living and dining room flows into the kitchen.

Histed said last year that the kitchen and bathrooms are original except for the wall paint.

Du Bois introduced his “Swiss Miss” collection in Vista Las Palmas, which Bob Dumas and the Alexander Construction Co. developed in the 1950s. The midcentury-modern neighborhood was once populated by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin and Peter Lawford.
