Fodor’s 101 ‘most incredible’ hotels include 2 California hot spots

The “Fodor’s Finest” tradition went on hold last year, as the pandemic brought travel to a standstill. Now, as the world reopens, the travel guide company is bringing its world’s best feature back with a list of the 101 “most incredible hotels” in the world for 2022.

Most “best hotels” lists skew heavily toward the fanciest, hoitiest of the toity accommodations. The Fodor’s version spreads the love around, showcasing hotels of every variety, from glamping to luxe, at price points that range from the low $100s to the mid-five figures. (Surprise! Glamping options often fall into the latter category.)

Twenty U.S. hotels are included on the big list — and two are in California. The adults-only Dive Palm Springs is a former midcentury motel turned boutique inn with 11 Cote d’Azur-inspired rooms. Think 1960s Saint-Tropez meets midcentury-mod desert oasis. (This being Palm Springs, prices swing dramatically, but summer rates start in the low $200s, winter rates in the mid-$300s.)

The Santa Monica Proper was recently named to Fodor’s list, as well. (Courtesy The Ingalls for the Santa Monica Proper)

And the Santa Monica Proper, which is part of a small boutique chain that includes hotels in San Francisco and Los Angeles, offers ocean views and poolside dining — on the roof — and 271 rooms (starting in the mid-$400s).

Here are the 20 U.S. picks. Find the full 101, plus wanderlust-inspiring photos and details, at www.fodors.com/worlds-best/hotels.
