FREMONT – Officers on Monday night fired pepper balls at Gaza war protesters near the Tesla plant in Fremont, police said.
Around 80 people gathered for an assembly near Kato Road and State Route 262, just south of the factory, Fremont police Sgt. Kim Macdonald wrote in an email to this news organization.
Macdonald said officers “deployed pepper balls in response to the actions of those present at the protest.”
There were no arrests or reports of injuries, Macdonald said. As of 8:40 p.m., the majority of the protesters had left the scene.
Around 7:30 p.m., police issued a traffic advisory for Interstate 880 and State Route 262, as well as Industrial Drive, Fremont Boulevard and Kato Road. Motorists were warned to expect traffic delays “due to a peaceful march taking place.”
The march followed other protests against the war in Gaza that temporarily shut down I-880 in Oakland and the Golden Gate Bridge. The California Highway Patrol said it arrested 38 people on charges including unlawful assembly and conspiracy.
Macdonald said the march appeared to be connected to the protests earlier in the day.
