Vacation planning has been a bit of a roller coaster experience the last few years, as pandemic anxiety kept made people close to home, while pent-up wanderlust made others yearn to fly far, far away.

But a recent Airbnb survey found that 90 percent of its guests were considering traveling this summer. Bookings for Airbnb digs abroad are back to pre-pandemic levels. The popularity of “unique homes” — tiny houses, for example, barns and treehouses (!)  — has soared. And several international destinations, starting with Venice and The Bahamas, have proven irresistible to vacationers contemplating summer plans.

Of course, these survey results don’t hold true for everyone — and data crunchers focused on Airbnb searches in the first quarter of 2022, so there’s no data available for the procrastinator demographic. (Or, as we prefer to be called, “spontaneous types.”)

But the 10 most popular international destinations among U.S. Airbnb bookers are a beach-centric bunch, with eight of the vacation havens in sea-lapped spots. The way they cluster is interesting, too. Beachy or not, they’re all in Italy, the Caribbean, Mexico or Costa Rica. (We’re not sure what to make of that. No one’s going to Barcelona — or when in Spain, book a hotel?)

Here’s Airbnb’s top 10 trending international destinations for summer, according to U.S. guest searches:

  1. Venice,  Italy
  2. Nassau, The Bahamas
  3. Capri, Italy
  4. Puerto Escondido, Mexico
  5. Tamarindo, Costa Rica
  6. Quepos, Costa Rica
  7. Florence, Italy
  8. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
  9. La Paz, Mexico
  10. Mérida, Mexico
