3/13/2004 –Chetana Mehta , was one of several thousand followers of the late Rev. Pandurangshastri Athavale, affectionately known as Dadaji , who gathered at the Flint Center for Performing Arts on the DeAnza College campus in Cupertino to mourn the man, who was the founder of a movement called Swadhyay. Athavale, of Bombay India, died at age 83 in October of 2003 . An urn containing his ashes was on display and and 83 doves, one for each year Dadaji lived, were released after a brief ceremony outside the Flint Center. Then followers went inside, listened to speeches by his daughter, Jayashree Talawalker plus Bay Area politicians , and then filed by the ashes to pay homage. According to one of the organizer’s of Saturday’s event, there are millions of Dadji’s followers in 33 different countries. Talawalker, who lives in Bombay, is travelling with her father’s ashes to cities around the world where there he has large numbers of followers so that disciples can memorialize Dadaji in “A Tribute to A Great World Humanitarian” . Dadaji, who was the winner of the Templeton Prize for the Progress in Religion in 1997, taught that God is within all people and that devotion is not just internalized but should be accompanied by work for social good and selfless action. His philosophy asks people to recognize the inner presence of God, which he said leads to a sense of self esteem as well as an awareness of the divine presence within all persons. Devotees from the greater Bay Area, California and other western states attended Saturday’s event.

The Flint Center for the Performing Arts, a historic piece of Silicon Valley history, will be demolished after more than 50 years. The Cupertino theater was the site where Apple co-founder Steve Jobs introduced the original Macintosh computer in 1984, and has been home to a number of Apple launch events over the years. The Celebrity Forum, a speaker series that has been a staple at Flint since 1976, has brought to the stage foreign dignitaries such as former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto and anti-apartheid leader Desmond Tutu and celebrities like 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and Star Trek actor George Takei. Flint has also hosted Broadway shows, local symphonies, nutcrackers, religious services and college graduations.

But that legacy is over, after the board of the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District voted earlier this month to close the theater for good and rebuild another facility in its place.
